I finally got around to ticking off 'Grow Sprouts' on my New Year's to do list and as expected, I wish I had done it waaaaaay earlier! I had so much fun watering and observing the growth of these guys from one day to the next. The experiment reminded me of that time I was 10 years old looking after my friend's tamagotchi for the summer. Except without the whole dropping it in the pool thing.
I chose to sprout lentils simply because I had some in the cupboard, and my research told me that I'd see quick results. And whoa do these guys grow fast! By the end of day one I had sproutage. When I woke up the next morning, the tendrils had grown to about 5 mm and by day four they were busting out of the jar.
The process is super easy. You soak 2-3 tablespoons dried lentils overnight, then give them a rinse in the morning, cover your jar with cheesecloth or a nifty tea strainer as I did, then rinse about 4 more times throughout the day (every 4-5 hours). Do this for 4 days (by day three I had slowed down the rinsing to just 2 times) and badabing you got yourself some sprouts. Such fun.
What to do with your spout babies? Avocado toast is my favourite application but you could pop them in a salad or wellness bowl or even just snack on them straight up. There's something so very satisfying about eating food that you have poured this much love into.
I guess I should mention that I'm less than half way through my New Year's to do list. Not ideal, but I have always been a last minute kinda gal. Watch this space.
