You know how in the biz they tell you never to work with children or animals? Any food blogger will tell you to add ice cream to that list (#amirite?) so please go ahead and imagine the ridiculousness of getting a cat to sit still while trying to photograph an ice cream cake. And double that trouble. But alas, these are the lengths I go to for you guys. And coincidently, these are also the lengths I go to to play with cats and eat ice cream.
So if you could kindly look beyond the trés melty cake and into the eyes of this furry duo, I'd like to introduce you to Jack and Luna - and their parents Christopher and Laura. Oh, and these aren't just any cats, they're 100% instafamous. (I've told you I have awesome friends like a hundred times jeez).
I asked them about all things feline while we made an ice cream cake in their likeness. You know, between ripping up cardboard boxes and chasing feather sticks for dayzzzz.
// I've never interviewed cats before.
Well we've never been interviewed before, so we're all newbies here!
// Tell us a little bit about yourselves.
We are brother and sister, born 6th December 2013. Jack got his name from Jack White, because our parents met at a White Stripes concert, and Luna is named after Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter. We are Devon Rex, chosen because our mum has allergies and because apparently Devon Rexes are known for having super awesome personalities. And we're certainly living up to our name!
We love hanging out with our mum and dad, so much so that sometimes we drive them a bit mad, meowing in their faces all the time. In our spare time we love to "hunt" (watch and growl at) birds from the windowsill, scratch the couch, knock magnets of the fridge and then chew them them into oblivion, chase lasers, chase each other, get chased by mum and dad and most of all, we love to snuggle.
// Do you have a favourite toy?
The Da Bird. By a mile. NOTHING else compares. Handcrafted in the USA, it's pretty much just a few feathers on a piece of string but there is just something about that Da Bird... They should make a movie about it. Quite a few of our cat friends on Instagram have them too and our mum and dad show us photos of them playing with them. Da birds are the BEST.
// You are on Instagram. How did this happen and how is this a part of your daily lives?
Well, our mum decided that she didn't want to inflict hundreds of cat photos on her non-cat-loving friends on social media. So she started a separate account that was all about us, and her friends could follow it if they were that way inclined. But because we were so gosh darn cute, our page has grown far bigger than she ever expected and she is now sharing our photos with people all over the world.
We're not really fazed by our fame. The only way it affects us in our daily lives is the fact that we get followed around by a big camera and we're pretty used to that now. And often the camera lens catches the light and creates shadows for us to chase, so we have quite a bit of fun!
// Can you give us any goss on any other #catsofinstagram?
Well we don't gossip much but we'd love to tell you a bit about some of our friends! We follow all sorts of cats on Instagram. @hugo_and_wendell were kind enough to share us on their page when we were new to Instagram and helped us grow our page. But that was back when it was just Hugo - Wendell is his younger brother who only recently came on the scene and we've loved watching him grow up. @asetaawo is the page of a beautiful fellow Devon whose mum drew an amazing fan art drawing of us! We've never been to art school, but we could tell it was really good.
Also, speaking of #catsofinstagram, mum managed to get us onto the offiicial page, which is how we came to have many of the followers we do. When it happened, mum and dad were jumping around like it was the best thing ever, it was weird. We were more excited about the dried kangaroo treat we got out of it.
// What's your top social media tips?
Be friendly. Hashtag to find new friends, and respond to comments from the ones you already have because it's so nice having friends to share stories with. Because our followers are from all over the world, we've worked out that by posting early in morning and late at night, we reach the most amount of people because that's when the whole world is awake (just at opposite ends of the day!).
// Jack, did I just hear the toilet flush?
Why yes Erika, you did*! Our parents are trying to train us to use the human toilet rather than our litter tray. I'm (Jack) a real cool dude and have just gone with the flow and accepted it. My sister Luna though is a bit more fussy and has been resisting. She once held in her business for like two days until mum and dad brought the old litter box out again. She's such a girl! She'll come around though.
*toilet is still flushed by our humans.
Brownie Ice Cream Cake
The brownie at the base of this cake is Chris' mum's amazing creation. Feel free to omit the ice cream and just eat it on it's own. Warm, obviously.
For the Brownie base
375g good dark chocolate
2 cups coconut sugar
2 cups almond meal or hazelnut meal (or mixture)
Ice Cream, softened
Chocolate Rectangles (or rectangular biscuits)
Melt chocolate and butter together in bowl (in microwave or in bowl over pan of water).
Whisk in the sugar, until well combined, then add eggs one at a time, followed by the almond meal.
Pour into high sided slice tin that is lined with grease proof paper and cook at 150°c for about 30 mins. A knife stuck into the middle shouldn't stick, but if it's moist that's okay (or better than okay).
Cool for 5-10 mins then turn out and peel off the paper.
To make the cake, line a deep round cake tin (preferably with loose base - we used a mini tin - about 12cm or 4.5") with glad wrap then cut the brownie to fit into the base. Make sure the brownie is completely cool, then firmly pack in ice cream to the top.
Freeze until hard (overnight is suggested) then decorate in the likeness of your feline friend.
Thanks for sharing your cat lovelies, brownie cake and saturday with me Chris and Laura! I'll cat sit (but possibly cat nap) anytime.
